Extension to 1920s House

Mansfield Road

The site is a spacious five bedroom Victorian semi-detached house with private gardens in Reading. The accommodation is distributed within three floors and a cellar. We discussed with the clients their plans to create a larger Kitchen/Breakfast Room towards the rear.

The extension could have a flat roof with a lantern or a skylight and possibly using bi-fold doors. We also looked at the beautiful existing Dining Room and how the new layout could incorporate glazed doors to maximise daylight into this space.

With modern and simultaneously merging traditional creamy interiors, the extension now enhances the ground floor towards the garden, while the saturated colour of the bricks matches the existent building. Inside the new building we visually identified two separated sections. The functional side, which gravitates around the refurbished kitchen, and complements it. The relaxed and bright area in front of the dining room, which becomes a kind of green patio, an anti-space, a warm transition linking the formal part of the house with the private garden.

At first floor the works included other internal alterations for refurbishing the family bedroom, walk-through wardrobe and en-suite in the bedroom area.

North Town Moor

This property was a three bedroom 1960’s semi-detached house set in the outskirts of Maidenhead. The clients had already carried out a two storey extension towards the backyard and some internal refurbishment. They approached us during the phase of re-arranging the Kitchen and Entrance Hall/ Stairs layouts to reconfigure an open plan Kitchen/ Breakfast Room with views over the rear garden. We discussed the configuration of the new Kitchen/ Breakfast Room and how this would link with the possible conversion of the existing rear Garage into a residential Annex and single storey link between the house and the Garage. We looked at the possible roof design which could also have an aesthetic impact on the existing lean-to roof towards the back of the house.

The transition zone, linking the main house with the Annex for the parents, was designed as a sunny place where they could meet up as in a garden dayroom. This inner shared patio, is the main feature of the building now, and it is characterized by glazed corner doors and a central lantern.

By giving dignity to any architectural period and style, we chose to create a dialogue with the 60s building identity and language and reinterpreting its material and proportions into the modern extension, as in the windows or in the simplicity of the facade.

This silent neutral annex, infilling the plot, introduced a concept of capillarity, a distinctive element of an urban environment, into the architectural scale of a residential plot.

1950s 3-bed-semi Re-development & Modernisation

This particular build was for a typical 1950s 3-bed-semi in Windsor. 
Now completed, the property is a 4-bed-semi with bright and contemporary open plan downstairs family living area. The kitchen, being the heart of the home, opens out onto the redesigned modern patio-decking via the large glass bi-fold doors. The breakfast bar island merges the kitchen area with the sofa sitting area- to which the roof light further brightens the space. Lastly the dormers add valuable space to the upstairs areas- allowing personal space for each member of the growing family.

1950s 3-bed-semi Redevelopment

Sheridan Avenue

The clients had been living in this 1930s detached house for some time and they were keen to increase the amount of living space at ground floor and to bring indoor the fresh, relaxed garden atmosphere.

The property site is on a steep slope and the front house has got the floating feeling of being on a boat. The first step for us was to understand the topography and how to convert these original constraints into links throughout the building and the surroundings.

We discussed how to incorporate an existing Store Room to the rear of the Kitchen/Utility Room. Having converted the Store Room into in a Sitting Room/ Guest Room and designed possible ways of linking the room to the house and the side steps down into the Garage, we also straightened the wall facing the patio to liberate circulation area and gain small amount of additional floor space. Domestic intimacy and a peaceful sense of place merge in this pretty little project.

Arborfield House

We are currently working on the renovation of Arborfield House, a two-storey detached early Victorian/Tudor-style manor house built in the 1830s.

We aim to consolidate the various outbuilding and create a new extension to develop the sequence of approach and entry to the house.

The Moorings

This project is a collaboration with Raji Kaur Khaira, Luxury Real Estate Agent, who approached us to discuss the potential of 67 Camp Road, a residential property within a prestigious location in Gerrards Cross . We created a new design proposal without demolition of the existing property, and created a 3D model to present the possibilities for a potential buyer.

Sawyers Crescent

Our clients approached us as they were going through purchasing the site. The site had extant planning approval for four new houses. We reviewed the design to maximise the potential and moved the project through the necessary additional planning applications to add valuable spaces.

We then successfully took the project through compliance with building regulations, tendering to contractors and consultancy during the site works. Careful consideration was given to the material for high-end units.

Lastly, we  are replacing the entrance gates to give more privacy to the front area of the garden and the new sitting area / patio space outside the new Kitchen/ Dining Room.

Hill Avenue

The site was a period three-storey building with a recent addition to the rear. The space was used as offices. The client purchased the site to convert the upper floors into flats and retain the ground floor shop.

We provided a design that maximised the available space, providing four self-contained units, including an additional that our clients did not envision at the outset.

The project gained permitted development consent to change the use of the building from office to residential. We are currently working on the construction stage.



Bradgate extension to 1920s elegant detached house

Bradgate is an elegant 1920s four bedroom detached house set at the edge of woodlands outside old Beaconsfield. The house sits on a large site and, when Mr and Mrs Gray approached the house, was as originally designed and in need of repair. Many of the house features were intact as the site is on green belt area. We have been asked to maximise the size of the house by extending towards the front and sides to provide a modern Kitchen/ Family Room, a double height Hallway and Stairs and Gallery and a Play Room/Cinema. The first floor was to be fully rearranged and the roof void to be converted.
